Microstructure- Material Basis for Mechanical Properties
The research goal of this project is to examine the impact of microstructure –material on the stochastic fracture process. The microstructure phases and grain size distributions provide a spatial basis for understanding mechanics material damage modeling. The project will work with characterizing microstructures and determine a class of distributions using metallographic examination and crystallographic data. The project will involve sample preparation, measurements and examination of stochastic processes in microstructure.
We will study limited case set to show the general trend of fracture conditions. We will focus on the development of the fracture surface topographic features. The surface topography will be measured at different levels for one of the fractured surface pair to assess the role of feature scale on the match accuracy.
