It is shown that intergranular fracture along prior-austenite grain boundaries in a ultrahigh-strength quenched and tempered 4340-type steel is not suppressed by eliminating all segregated embrittling elements. This leaves open the question of how brittle intergranular cracks are nucleated in hydrogen in the absence of such impurities. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
