This LDRD effort is aimed the development of methods for the quantification of dynamics at the surfaces of heterogeneous catalysts, using solid-state NMR. Equilibrium and non-equilibrium dynamics motions in heterogeneous catalysts are well known to have a large impact on the activity and longevity of a catalyst, however these are often poorly understood given that the most commonly used microscopy methods are limited to the observation of relatively slow dynamics. Solid-state NMR is sensitive to the local motions occurring on a very wide range of time scales and has the potential to yield new insights into the atomic-scale motion and dynamics occurring at the interface.
