The April 18, 2008 issue of Science magazine features "Coherent Dynamics of a Single Spin Interacting with an Adjustable Spin Bath," co-authored by Ames Laboratory physicist Viatcheslav Dobrovitski. Optical or electrical pulses can rapidly locate and manipulate the spin of a single electron in a quantum dot or of a nitrogen vacancy in diamond.
