$5,000 donation given to support science and math competitions

Ames Laboratory Science Bowl coordinator Steve Karsjen (center) accepts a check for $5,000 from Larry Conley, 3M Human Resources manager, and Cheri Pearson, 3M Human Resources coordinator.

Although 3M has been a key corporate sponsor of the Science Bowl for the past seven years, the $5,000 donation is the largest contribution ever given by the company, according to Steve Karsjen, Science Bowl coordinator for the Ames Laboratory. “The willingness of 3M to make a contribution of this size demonstrates the company’s commitment to helping educate the next generation of scientists and engineers,” said Karsjen.

The Ames Laboratory/ISU Science Bowl is the premier science and math competition for both high school and middle school students in Iowa. Each year, 48 teams (240 students) from schools across Iowa participate in the highly competitive High School Science Bowl academic competition. Students answer questions in areas such as physics, math, chemistry and biology. The winner of the High School Science Bowl receives an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the National High School Science Bowl sponsored by the Department of Energy.

The Middle School Science Bowl is a two-day event. On the first day, students participate in the hydrogen
fuel-cell model car race held in the atrium of Howe Hall on the ISU campus. The second day is set aside for the academic competition. Sixteen teams (80 students) from middle schools across Iowa compete in the annual event. The winner of the academic competition goes on to compete in the National Middle School Science Bowl in Denver, Colo. Since 1991, over 3,000 high school and middle school students have participated in the Ames Laboratory/ISU Science Bowl.

In making the award, 3M recognized the long-term success of the Ames Laboratory/ISU Science Bowl. “3M proudly supports local and regional community activities that have a positive impact on our community and the people in the community,” said Dennis McKernan, plant manager for 3M in Ames, Iowa.

Dates have already been set for the 2008 High School and Middle School Science Bowls. The high school competition will be held Jan. 26. The Middle School Science Bowl will be held April 11-12.

Ames Laboratory, celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2007, is operated for the Department of Energy by Iowa State University. The Lab conducts research into various areas of national concern, including the synthesis and study of new materials, energy resources, high-speed computer design, and environmental cleanup and restoration.
