Division of Materials Sciences and Engineering (DMSE)

The Materials Sciences and Engineering Division of the DOE's Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES) supports the majority of basic research conducted at Ames Laboratory.  The Division of Materials Sciences and Engineering (DMSE) research portfolio is organized into 17 Field Work Proposals (FWPs/Projects).  Each Project has a designated leader, who serves as the lead investigator of the research effort.  The Project leader defines the scientific goals and objectives of the Project, and allocates resources (staffing and funds) to meet these objectives, and to coordinate the efforts of the individual Principal Investigators (PIs) in the effort. As new scientific opportunities arise, we will establish new Projects in response, bearing in mind they will have a high expectation of establishing world leadership in their areas.
